Grafting & Pruning
February 18 @ 9:00 am - 3:00 pm$40
Part one of this hands on grafting class will cover theory behind propagation of apple, pear, and stone fruit. We will still discuss summer chip budding, top working, and bridge grafting. Participants will learn how to do a dormant bench graft and leave with their very own grafted tree. Grafting knives will be available for use but please bring a knife if you have one.
Part two will focus on pruning, an art that takes many years to master. Students will learn some basic guidelines for where to start. Many of the concepts for raising your freshly grafted trees also apply to bringing your old neglected orchard back into production.
While we will cover some theory, the majority of this class will take place in the orchard so dress accordingly! Please also bring a bag lunch.
About the instructors:
Greg Rothman has been working for Cummins Nursery since 2008, and in that time has propagated upwards of forty thousand fruit trees via chip budding and grafting.
Dustin Underwood has been managing orchards for close to ten years, which has included pruning, grafting, topworking, and spraying.
