Scything: Make a Scythe & Learn to Mow

Instructor: Jeromy Biazzo, Wolftree Farm, skilled scythe maker and mower, and co-owner of Wolftree Farm

Students will make a simple one handed snath (handle) to fit a blade they bring or purchase from Groundswell. Snath design and assembly will be made simpler so that more time can be applied to mowing. Ring clasps will be purchased and handles will be attached with a hanger bolt.

Course Fee: $50
Materials Fee: $90
Total: $140
Materials needed: Scythe blade, ring clasps, whetstone, whetstone holder. If you plan to bring all of these items we will waive the Materials fee. (Pay just the Course Fee)

Due to low attendance, we have canceled this workshop. Good news is we have a beginner scything class coming up on July 8th!

The scythe has been used as a human powered mowing technique for centuries. Austrian-style scythe blades are forged from a single piece of steel into a light and graceful tool. Get your scythe ready for the season at this upcoming workshop! Students will learn how to prepare their blades for peening, use a peening jig and sharpen with a whetstone.  Scythe Fitting issues will also be addressed.

Date: Saturday, May 20th, 9:00AM – 2:00PM
Location: Groundswell’s Incubator Farm, Ithaca
Cost: $30 Workshop Fee
Tools required: scythe
Materials Fee: $65 for jig, whetstone, whetstone holder, earplugs [Waived if you plan to bring your own materials]

Hand Mowing & Hay Making

Sunday, August 7th • 9am – 5pm

Spend the morning making an adjustable Austrian-style scythe to take home. In the afternoon, practice proper techniques for mowing and caring for scythes.

(If you come for the afternoon only you may bring your own scythe or share a scythe with others)
