West Haven Farm Part Time Crew Positions for 2017
West Haven Farm, located in Ithaca, NY, grows 10 acres of certified organic fruits and vegetables. Since 1992, our produce has been distributed to the community through CSA, Farmers’ Market and local restaurants. We strive to create a fun, yet efficient and challenging work environment.
West Haven Farm is looking for PT crew members. Potential applicants should have:
• Demonstrated work ethic
• Attention to detail, while working efficiently
• Enthusiasm for growing good healthy food
• A desire to explore farming as a livelihood
• The ability to work as part of a team
• Self-awareness, open to feedback and willingness to improve themselves
• Ability to lift 50 lbs repeatedly and work outside in all types of weather
• Prior farm experience preferred, but not required
Farm Duties (may include, but not limited to)
• Greenhouse production – seeding, watering, planting
• Harvest and post harvest handling for a wide variety of fruits and vegetables
• Transplanting greenhouse, hoophouse and field crops
• Broad range of field tasks, including weeding, mulching, trellising, hand hoeing, irrigation, pest management, use of row covers
• Record Keeping
• Rotation of farm chores (clean bathroom and kitchen, etc)
• Supervision of volunteers
Work Schedule
• Regular work will start in April and end the Saturday before Thanksgiving
• PT work week is M-F 8-12 with occasional Saturday hours
• Possibility for additional work after Thanksgiving depending on needs of the farm
Compensation
• Starting base wage of $10/hr
• Housing and meals are not included
• Vegetables and fruit to eat for personal consumption
• Additional fruit and value-added products at wholesale price
• Worker's Compensation and Disability Benefits Insurance
• Initial 90 day probationary employment period
Additional Educational Opportunities
• Participation in the Finger Lakes CRAFT program, including tours of CRAFT member farms
• Possibility of gaining marketing skills at the Saturday market stall
• Learning basic tractor safety and operation
• An exposure to a wide range of experiences and techniques relevant to operating a sustainable farm
