He will be sharing his story and what has led him through a lifetime of food justice and advocacy work. \n\n \n\nLeons was born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the capital. His childhood was spent in Goma\, a small town in the eastern part of the country in the region of North Kivu. Leons was forced to mature before his time due to the traumatic experiences that he endured in the Democratic Republic of Congo before reaching 15 years of age. After the Rwandan genocide in 1994\, the region of North Kivu especially the town of Goma\, welcomed all the Hutu refugees who ran away and sought asylum in the Congo in search for safety and a better lifestyle. Forward to 2002\, the most dramatic volcanic eruption of the Nyiragongo volcano in Goma happened\, and his mother and brothers were all present. So\, two years later in 2004 they left the town of Goma to join their father here in America. Leons graduated from Garfield High School in Prince William county in northern Virginia in 2008. In 2013\, Leons received a Bachelor of Science in Economics with a minor in business management from Shepherd University. Leons speak five languages. In 2016\, after farming for a year and learning the conventional methods of agriculture\, Leons graduated from West Virginia University\, Davis college of agriculture and natural resources and design with a focus in Community Development\, and took a job at Our Community Place a few years after\, applying his knowledge of agriculture\, farming\, community and non-profit work with him. \n  \n\nTo learn more about Leons visit the following links: \nIG: congobongo9 \nMore about the Jupiter Market Garden

SUMMARY:Centering Racial Equity in Your Organization or Foundation
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday June 24\, 2020\n3:30 – 5:00pm\nOnline Webinar\nRegister Here (*required)\nJoin the 2019 CFF Champion Award winner\, Groundswell Center for Local Food & Farming\, for this year’s Champions Briefing\, an event wholly designed and created by the award recipient. Groundswell Center will dig deep into their process of centering racial equity and anti-racist principles into their agricultural organization and discuss how to bring this work into your organization or foundation. As a non-profit with predominantly white leadership\, Groundswell will examine staff/board development\, relationship building\, organizational policymaking\, and systems for accountability. \nSpeakers will be: \n\n\n\nPatrice Lockert Anthony\, Interim Executive Director. Patrice knows it is incredibly difficult to lead a busy life full of the daily grind and commit to being part of the resistance to help shape the community and world into what we could be. She has been an advocate\, activist\, educator\, and warrior-rebel for most of her life. For the last 36 years her focus has been on food justice\, BIPOC concerns\, and the co-op movement. She has\, for several decades\, believed that people in general\, and Black people in particular should return to the land (especially as they left it through being forced off without charge\, trial\, or remuneration). \n  \n  \n \nNatalie Hughes\, Development Manager. Natalie coordinates fundraising operations and communications\, and supports grant-writing and food justice program development. Natalie spent the first five years of her career with VINES in Binghamton\, NY where she managed a youth employment program on an urban farm and transformed vacant lots into vibrant community gardens. She is an activist and a member of Ithaca’s chapter of SURJ (Showing Up for Racial Justice)\, a network that organizes white people to undermine white supremacy and to work toward racial justice. \n  \n  \n  \n\nGroundswell Center was the 2019 winner of the Community Food Funders Champion Award. One of the perks of the award is to host a funder briefing with CFF on content of the awardee’s choosing. This event is the CFF Champion funder briefing for this year. \nMore about Groundswell Center\n\n\n\nThe mission of Groundswell Center is to train the next generation of sustainable farmers in the Finger Lakes. They support individuals to develop agricultural skills and grow profitable\, equitable and ecologically sound farm businesses. They work to dismantle racism in the food system by addressing inequalities in access to land and resources and prioritizing support for underrepresented producers including people of color\, refugees\, women and individuals with limited resources. \nGroundswell Center runs an incubator farm on 6-acres with 80% of the farm business run by refugees; offers hands-on workshops led by sustainable farmers and social justice activists that integrate practical and regenerative farming techniques applicable to all growers; provides a 10-week farm business planning course; and regularly hosts food justice discussion groups and other events.
