November 10th Community Farm Day at Soul Fire Farm

Groundswell Center for Local Food and Farming in Ithaca, NY coordinated a Community Caravan of 18 people from Ithaca to Grafton, NY, outside of Albany, for a Day of Community Farm work, with over 100 others from all over the Northeast, at Soul Fire Farm.

We collectively accomplished, what seemed like close to a week’s worth of farm work in about four hours! The group had fun, got stuck in a ditch, made friends, did some networking, learned new skills, got muddy, got pulled out of a ditch, and after the work was done, shared a community potluck. After lunch, Leah signed books for people that wanted a copy of her newly published book: ” Farming While Black”.

The diversity of attendees represented a true cross section of ethnicity, age, gender identity, and more. It was undeniable and inspiring!  The event was a testimony to the support for a well-loved and valued organization with a growing network of support reaching far beyond New York State!

I was awe struck to see so many young people converge in the middle of “nowhere” to do farm work in the cold and muddy weather! When so many young folks are drawn, I usually encounter a whole lot of Awesome and a whole bunch of Majic! And it felt like both! We hope others will visit and get inspired to keep on spreading the love for food and justice! Stay tuned to their web site for next year’s dates and all their program offerings.

Thank you SOUL FIRE and all who came together to share the day
