How do you choose the best tree to harvest for mushroom logs, and when? Are fruiting platforms really the secret to preventing slug damage on mushroom logs? What's the process for DEC forestry grants like?

Maria Paone and Sean Carter of @sapwoodfarm have managed an off-grid homestead, small-scale sugarbush, and mushroom farm on forested land since 2014. From the beginning, their management has been centered around wildlife habitat, quality of water and soil, and tree health, and they've recently been recognized by @audubon_ny as one of New York State's *six* Bird-Friendly Maple producers. Join us as we take a look at the forest through their eyes and see some of the innovative and ecologically beneficial workings of their farm.

Thank you to all who came out to yesterday’s Vol Thank you to all who came out to yesterday’s Volunteer Day at the Incubator Farm! 🙏🌾We made great strides towards setting up a rainwater catchment system that will help the farm become more climate resilient and sustainable. Our system can help us collect up to 152 gallons of water for later use. ☀️⛈🌦

The effort took a lot of digging, tamping, spray painting, measuring, and shovelling. We couldn’t have done it without our volunteers, nor without the leadership and expertise of Kimberly. Thank you! See you next time 😉🌻
🌧🌧✨Volunteer Day Zine✨🌧🌧 Did you k 🌧🌧✨Volunteer Day Zine✨🌧🌧 Did you know that a house with a 30x50’ roof can capture almost 1000 gallons of water per inch of rainfall? We made this zine to introduce volunteers to the project we’ll be installing at the Incubator Farm today - hopefully we’ll finish in time for the storm!
Groundswell Center for Local Food & Farming is hap Groundswell Center for Local Food & Farming is happy to introduce its new Executive Director, Juliana Quaresma! Juliana’s tenure as Executive Director will start August 1, 2022. Juliana is no stranger to Groundswell, as she currently serves as the Incubator Farm and Aggregation Manager. Juliana has also previously served on the Groundswell Board of Directors.

Juliana was born and raised in Northeastern Brazil with ancestral roots in Indigenous and African peoples of Brazil on one side and ancestors from the Netherlands on the other side. She has been a part of the Ithaca community for 3 years. Juliana believes that Ithaca has a strong network and sense of community, of mutual aid, of advocacy for racial, gender and immigrants rights. Specifically related to food and farming, she highlights the fact that she loves the small farmers and the diversity of local, healthy and delicious food that can be found in the area. Juliana is very passionate to help connect people with food, farming and the environment and believes that the food system is not disconnected from the natural ecosystem.

With almost ten years of developing and implementing a diversity of educational programs in colleges and food justice non-profit organizations in Recife, Brazil and New York, Juliana has worked to support farmers by coordinating, training, and managing programs with agroecology, agroforestry, natural resources management in farming, and environmental and food justice. Juliana will continue this work and passion in the Executive Director role at Groundswell. Welcome, Juliana!

Help us build a water catchment system to support the incubator farm. This structure will store rainwater runoff from rooftops or other large surfaces and store it for later use. In light of climate change and the increasing unpredictability of rainfall and other weather patterns, having a bank of clean water helps the farm be more drought-resistant, self-sufficient, and economical.

The construction process will be fully guided and educational. Bring some water, work gloves, and your enthusiasm!

Registration is limited and coming up soon. Keep an eye out for our sign up link next week! No prior experience necessary.
