Summer and fall workshop offerings are here! 🌻 Summer and fall workshop offerings are here! 🌻 Join us next month for a special session on caring for one's body in the context of farm work:

CARING FOR THE FARM BODY, Sunday August 14th, 11am-2pm
Musculoskeletal pain from working on the land is very common but often goes unaddressed. Within a system that prioritizes short-term productivity over the long term viability of farm careers and farmworker bodies, regular self care is an essential part of maintaining connection to the land.

This hands-on session will include instruction in self massage, movement, and ergonomics from physical therapy and herbalism perspectives. Instructors Lo and Kimberly will teach massage techniques to use in the field, introduce a series of therapeutic plant allies, and lead the group in creating an herbal salve. Save the date - registration and more info to come!

Last weekend was about carpentry but wasn’t abou Last weekend was about carpentry but wasn’t about carpentry. It was about community, about self sufficiency on the land, about what forests provide to us, about the dream of building one’s own home…and about barbecue and elaborate meals because that’s how it’s supposed to be when we gather.

We opened up the workshop talking about relationships to forests: the material and spiritual resources they provide, respectful harvest, and how Indigenous forest stewardship has brought us in proximity to the wood species we have today. At the end of the workshop we visited instructor Miwa’s tiny house that she built herself and saw the possibilities of continuing with our new skills. We’ll definitely be linking up to support each other’s future projects.

Thank you everyone for coming and bringing laughter and celebration to a technical learning space! And huge thank you to @learningfarm for welcoming us to your space. We hope to offer future BIPOC carpentry courses - if you’re interested or know a BIPOC teacher to bring on board, let us know!
Just finished up day one of BIPOC Beginner Carpent Just finished up day one of BIPOC Beginner Carpentry! 🔨✨ We went over measuring, marking, circular saw cuts, drills, drivers, and pocket hole joinery. We got plenty of practice on our power tool technique with emphasis on safety, body mechanics, and accuracy & precision.

We talked a bit about the relationship between forests and wood as a material, what you’ll find if you seek out wood from a local sawmill (rough cut, surfaced, tree species), and how wood is in constant movement in relation to its environment even after a tree is cut.

Looking forward to building a waist height stand for this raised bed tomorrow - thank you to everyone who showed up today to work together and build community 🌻
First volunteer day of 2022 is on the books! Yeste First volunteer day of 2022 is on the books! Yesterday, we mulched several areas of the farm that were formerly grass with high mowing demand, such as the area by our dumpster and parking. Less mowing will reduce our dependence on fossil fuels for those areas and the mulch will build up the soil over time.

Thanks everyone, this task would have taken an entire day for one person, but the group finished it in under 2 hours!

Next volunteer date is Thursday, June 30, 5-7pm at the Incubator Farm.

We captured this #farmer2farmer moment at the #inc We captured this #farmer2farmer moment at the #incubatorfarm last week. We took advantage of plowing the fields while the weather was warm and now farmers are getting ready to use walk-behind tractors (aka BCS) to shape their beds.

Here, Paw Pha (ethnic Karen farmer from Burma and 6th year incubator grower), teaches Carlos (Peruvian farmer and newest grower at the farm) how to operate the equipment.
Spring magic: the fields are green, seeds are spro Spring magic: the fields are green, seeds are sprouting, and the farm is changing each and every day! Next Thursday we’re gathering at the Incubator Farm to work on spring maintenance - sign up to join at groundswellcenter.org/volunteer 🌱🌼
Big updates! After discussing our building plans a Big updates! After discussing our building plans and the list of skills we’ll practice, we’ve decided to expand this course to *two days* for more learning, more depth, and a more reasonable pace. We’ll be building two waist height raised beds.
